There are so many historical and artistic wonders in the Casas/ Mata Ortiz area.

One often overlooked is the jewelry production atLapidarios Barrera in Casas Grandes. Outside this place there is a storage yard for rocks, minerals, fossils, broken Mata Ortiz pots of all kinds and inside there is some of the finest Mexican jewelry for sale (at great factory prices). In between is the production area where maestro Armando Barrera oversees the production of a variety of pieces- including incredible ones from Mata Ortiz pottery.

Yes, we go to Copper Canyon often (10 trips from Dec, 10 through May, 11) and in our experience, it is afe to travel there. There have been no incidents- zero- with tourists in the area. Actually our guests comment on how secure they feel. One woman recently said. "I always felt safe". It is interesting that many of our travelers to the Sierras now are European. Our press is jaded and is having a hayday with sensationalizing what happens there.
