Mata Ortiz

Our Copper Canyon trips now include- actually end with (because it is so amazing) a stop to experience Mata Ortiz and the other fascinations of the Casas Grandes area. Actually as of mid 2012, we sometimes stop in this area on the way into the Copper Canyon area as well as on the way out- a very special area!

The Mata Ortiz pottery is beyond description…you have to experience it. The pots are very thin-walled, well shaped and even the less expensive ones have painting that is delicate.

You get your hands and eyes on these pots and you will freak.

The Paquime Indian ruins are an approachable and amazing historic experience…all unearthed in 1959-1961. Usually we stay close by the ruins on our trips and we are in the Casas Grandes area for 2 days.

Yes, we go to Copper Canyon often (10 trips from Dec, 10 through May, 11) and in our experience, it is afe to travel there. There have been no incidents- zero- with tourists in the area. Actually our guests comment on how secure they feel. One woman recently said. "I always felt safe". It is interesting that many of our travelers to the Sierras now are European. Our press is jaded and is having a hayday with sensationalizing what happens there.
